What is Kinesio tape?
A thin, stretchy, elastic cotton strip (almost identical to the human skin) with a heat sensitive acrylic adhesive that enables the skin to breathe. It therefore allows for a free range of movement without constricting or restricting unlike conventional athletic tape.
When is it used?
Kinesiology tape is used for treating athletic injuries and a variety of physical disorders. For the first decade after its introduction practitioners in Japan were the primary users of the therapeutic kinesiology tape. By 1988 the tape had been adopted by Japanese Olympic and professional athletes before spreading across the world.
Why is it beneficial?
More and more athletes are using kinesiology tape to improve their sporting performance, prevent injury and return to sport quicker.
Pain- by taking the pressure off pain receptors it reduces pain.
Lymphatic- eliminates lymphatic fluid/haematomas beneath the skin.
Joint- aids in stability to aid fascia and muscle function.
Muscle- addresses abnormal tension and can help support through strength or relaxation.
How long does it last?
It can be worn for up to 5 days without re-application (average 2-3).
There are no guarantees the tape will stay on for the allotted time evidenced, this will depend upon how the tape is looked after.
The tape must NOT get wet for the first 30 minutes after the tape has been applied.
If there is any itching or redness, then the tape must be removed immediately!
